Ravi Zacharias and Mitt Romney

Christian theologian Ravi Zacharias was recently interviewed by Paul Edwards concerning the possibility of Romney in the White House.

Ravi Zacharias spoke at the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City to an audience of 6000 back in November 2004.  Zacharias doesn’t come out directly and say he endorses Romney’s candidacy, but he does seem to leave the door open to the possibility.

Zacharias says,

“What we want is a politician who will understand the basic Judeo-Christian world view, and on the basis of that the moral laws of this nation are framed, and then run this country with the excellence of that which is recognized in a pluralistic society: the freedom to believe or to disbelieve, and the moral framework with which this was conducted: the sanctity of every individual life.”

Hugh Hewitt stated (audio here) in May 2007 that he believed the evangelical community is trying to “reconcile itself to Mitt Romney because he is such a good candidate, so smart, so competitent and so obviously not going to be under the control of Salt Lake City.”

Is this perhaps another indication of Evangelicals warming up to Romney?

You and I have spoken on this subject before and truly I have to respond that I haven’t yet seen a serious concern in evangelicals about Romney’s candidacy.

That said, there is some relevency to the notion, “The squeakiest wheel gets the grease..” which I think is often the problem in discussions concerning differences in evangelical and mormon thought.

This “squeaky wheel” issue may then present itself to LDS members as the “overall majority view of evangelicals” when I believe, that’s truly not the case.

I honestly think political evangelicals (I have to laugh even when I say that) are not in the least terribly concerned that Mitt is running, and many look at him as a really good moral candidate for the nation.

I think difference in theology really takes a second seat in this particular issue.
